What you need to know as we transition away from Submarine, Private Files, and Private API...
Pinata launched a feature called "Submarine" in Fall 2021, which allowed for files to be made private on a local IPFS network. Although innovative, the feature and its related app, Submarine.me, did not see significant usage. Therefore, we are discontinuing these services to focus on other aspects that bring more value to our users.

  1. How can I download all my private files?

If you've used the feature to upload private files, you can still access them until December 1st, 2023. To download these files:

    • Contact the Pinata team via the in-app messenger or send an email to [email protected], so a bulk download of your files can be prepared for you.

  2. How do I make my private files public?

You can easily make your private files public through the web app:

    1. Web App

      1. Navigate to your "Pin Manager" dashboard within the Pinata web app.

      2. Locate and click the tab labeled "Private."

      3. Find the file you wish to make public.

      4. Click the three dots (...) next to the file name.

      5. Select "Make Public."

    2. API

      1. Further instructions on using the API to make files public will be announced soon (TBA).

  3. How do I know if my files are public or private?

To check the status of your files:

    • Visit your "Pin Manager" dashboard.

    • If you have any private files, there will be a tab labeled "Private."

    • Click on this tab to view the files you have uploaded as private.

  4. How long do I have until my private files are deleted from the system?

Your private files will be accessible until December 1st, 2023. You will need to either download these files or make them public before this date to prevent them from being deleted.

  5. What do I need to do if I'm using a Private API for my project?

The Private API feature will be deprecated. You will need to remove any calls to the Private API from your code, as it will cease to function after December 1st, 2023.

  6. Will I still be able to upload Private files and use Submarine in the meantime?

You will not be able to upload new private files or use Submarine. Existing private files will remain accessible until December 1st, 2023.

  7. I'm still interested in token gating. Is there another service you can recommend?

If you are looking for alternatives for token gating, we suggest considering Lit Protocol. While we can't guarantee the quality of third-party services, Lit Protocol is a reputable option in this space.
